Teamwork and Know How, the secret of success in the MSN005 Refurbishment
Alestis has performed the adaptation work in the MSN005 A350 XWB, BF and S19.1, with the aim of making this test model airworthy and moving forward to final delivery by Airbus to the customer, French Blue.
The Commercial Bid process led by Jose Antonio Gutiérrez from Programmes, was in and of itself complicated, as although Alestis is required to perform the reworking for the packages of the S19.1 and BF of the A350 XWB, it was necessary to perform a thorough analysis for the project to be economically viable. Based on this analysis, the project, led from Programmes by Natividad Sánchez del Álamo, and sponsored by Carlos Domínguez, went through the following stages:
- Analysis and development: this began in October 2015 through the definition of an MFT in Alestis entrusted with analysing the modifications to be implemented, the temporary concessions, and the datasheets of this flight test aircraft. This stage is therefore critical for the project’s success as the full scope of the work to be performed is defined: the material that must be purchased, the parts that must be industrialised in internal manufacturing and the production necessary for execution of the work.
- Industrialisation: two types of modifications to the design were addressed in this stage: the standard modifications and the adaptation modifications, with the latter requiring a new generation of manufacturing drawings. In order to perform the chronological oversight, a Master Schedule was established that consisted of a detailed plan of: drawing design, manufacturing of parts and assembly thereof.
- Working party: Upon completion of the previous stages, the Alestis team performed the adaptation work of the MSN005 in a 2-month period (September-October 2016), thus complying with the delivery date required by Airbus.
This project has given rise to various challenges, such as the reorganisation of the assembly team in France after receiving indications from Airbus that the work would be performed in Bordeaux, specifically in the installations of the company Sabena located in the area of Bordeaux airport, instead of in Toulouse, where Alestis has a resident team with extensive capacity and experience, as was initially envisaged.
The project presented other challenges such as the need to define the layout of the installations, implementation of new jobs that were not envisaged in the initial scope, the logistics tasks that needed to be performed in order to coordinate the regular transport between the Plants and the new location in Bordeaux, and the search for a solution for the refrigeration of the chemical products. In any event, the work team was able to overcome all these challenges and complete the refurbishment tasks in compliance with the deadline defined by the Customer.
Delivery to the airline French Blue is planned for 26 June 2017, a period during which the other suppliers involved will complete their reworking in the MSN005 and it will be sent to the FAL in Toulouse.
