Alestis delivers the first tail cone for the A350 XWB v1000
Today, a representation of the Alestis Aerospace staff celebrated in the Puerto Real plant the delivery of the first S19.1 from the A350 XWB v1000 programme in the presence of the Airbus programme team and other relevant personalities from Andalusian institutions and the business world. With the delivery of the Tail Cone (Section 19.1) of the MSN059 airplane, the first prototype of the 1000 version of the A350 XWB programme, ALESTIS overcomes an unprecedented technological and industrial challenge, a job done together with all of the areas of the company.
The 19.1 section of the A350 XWB is the end structure of the airplane which houses in its interior the APU (auxiliary power unit); this component shows maximum innovation and is manufactured with and whose main materials are carbon and titanium.
All ALESTIS AEROSPACE plants participated in its manufacture and assembly: in Vitoria metallic elemental are made and the subsets of the Rear Fairing are put together; in Seville, the subsets of the interior Firewall and the maintenance access doors are put together; in Tecnobahía the carbon fiber pieces for automatic technology are manufactured and in the central plant in Puerto Real the final assembly of all of the components is carried out. Everywhere, Alestis implanted Lean Manufacturing concepts to optimise production.
The ALESTIS development team has successfully implemented projects aimed at weight and cost reduction of the component, which has led to a product of impressive features, and at the same time has duplicated the programme production rhythm. In can be said that the 4 milestones of the project were reached:
- On Time: today’s delivery date was set on the programme calendar more than a year ago, and the company complied with the established dates exactly.
- On Quality: The product complies with all of the established specifications, thus obtaining the qualification of Quality Gate: Green..
- On Weight: l The modifications incorporated in the MSN059 allow for a reduction of more than 13 kg. in the product, which was one of the biggest challenges of the programme.
- On Cost: The production costs have been reduced by 19% thanks to design optimisations than have eliminated pieces, changes in material and purchasing improvements, in addition to improvements in the production process.
Alestis has been able to comply with the augment in the programme’s rhythm of production and duplicated the production in 2015: in 2014 14 units were delivered, while during 2015 that number rose to 31 units. The new challenge and privilege for 2016 is to reach a delivery number of 69 additional units to reach Rate 8.
The A350 XWB-1000 is the longest fuselage version in the entire Airbus airplane family of wide fuselages, with a length of 73.4m. With a range of approximately 8,400 nautical miles, the aircraft can be set up to accommodate up to 440 passengers. By December 2015, Airbus had received 181 orders for this model.
